Artist Statement:

I became interested in the impact the textile industry has on the environment and how much textile waste is generated worldwide, especially in Australia. With mass production comes mass consumption and there is a greater cost to the seemingly convenience of fast fashion. In my practice alone, a lot of waste is generated - fabric offcuts, wool and cotton scraps, each piece is evidence of the process and a fragment of its former self.

Wanting to reconfigure how this waste is perceived, Hanging By A Thread utilises these materials in it’s painterly, textural construction, the offcuts are mended together by thread and the remnants form to tell a story of chaos and order through this transformation. Layered throughout the work are hidden narratives and memories, what we once considered waste shifts in perspective and instead forms a portrayal of time, healing, the ability for renewal and re-purpose, and the cycle of life
